Ann Arbor: 16th in Geeks per Capita

A National Science Foundation (NSF) report lists Ann Arbor as the 16th geekiest city in the U.S.

16th??!! It certainly seems like we should be ranked higher, doesn’t it? Well, it all depends on the criteria. In this case, the NSF ranked cities percentage of workers in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics occupations.

That’s a very simplistic way to rank, in my humble opinion. It doesn’t take into account a host of other factors, such as hobby groups devoted to science and technology like the Lowbrow Astronomers and the ARROW amateur radio club. I think that if you could somehow factor those in we’d rank a lot higher.

Oh well, at least we made the top 20.
