A couple of weeks ago, our District 6380 Trainer, Karen Gabrys, asked me to lead a training session on club committees. Having chaired several committees for the Ann Arbor (MI, USA) Rotary Club, this is a particular interest of mine. I countered her proposal, though, and suggested that instead of taking a broad stroke on committees, that the session focus on committe chairs. In particular, I wanted to:
- Discuss what committee chairs do.
- Explore the traits of good committee chairs.
- Evaluate how clubs select their committee chairs.
If this sounds like the session goals of a Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) module, you’d be correct. In developing the session, I used RLI as a template.
The topics we discussed included:
- Why are committee chairs important?
- What are the traits of a good committee chair?
- What do committee chairs do?
- How does your club select committee chairs?
The session really hit the mark. The response really blew me away, but I guess there’s a real need for basic information like this. Nearly every seat in the room was taken, and I actually ran out of handouts. The discussion was truly amazing. I wish that I’d recorded it.
